Transportation is a big sector, and the Upstate is a growing region - here’s how we tackle it all.

UMA works across ten counties: Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, and Union. Every year, the Upstate Mobility Alliance selects a few key “priority projects” that we feel are poised for a positive impact on the region’s mobility sectors. We chart out an 18-24 month plan for each of these areas so that we can dig in and not only have a measurable impact, but also have a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand.

By allowing these focus areas to shift over time, we are able to stay sensitive to the changing landscape of the mobility sector, and the unique trends in our region.

We don’t just hang our hats on these 3-4 priority projects though. We continuously host conversations about every area of the transportation sector, collaborate with partners across the spectrum on smaller initiatives, and advocate for the entire sector whenever possible.

Current Projects

  • Vanpooling

Vanpooling offers a unique solution to employer and employee transportation challenges. Employees who live within the same general area meet at a pre-determined location and hop on board a large consumer vehicle, rented and subsidized by various funding streams. With one of their own colleagues as the appointed driver, employees travel together to and from work.

  • Trail Connections

Connecting communities and places of interest via biking/walking trails not only provides better mobility for individuals, but also healthier lifestyles. UMA helps bring together community leaders and industry experts to review trail connection opportunities and paths forward.

  • Advocacy

UMA leverages its regional presence and strong local relationships to help advance investments and policy that support transportation for all communities. By strengthening the support system underpinning current and future transportation solutions is vital to making mobility better across the Upstate.

  • Connecting the Dots

UMA invites industry experts in the region to participate in virtual interviews and panel discussions around some of our most pressing mobility needs and trends. Register and/or tune in to our next conversation, or listen to a past webinar or podcast recording and hear directly from those working on the ground to enhance the Upstate’s mobility.

  • Mobility Tours

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the places that help connect the Upstate and keep our region moving forward. Join a small group of advocates as we explore the Upstate’s “mobility assets” including manufacturers, trail systems, logistics centers, and transportation hubs.

  • Special Project: GSP Transit Hub

UMA was awarded a grant from SC DOT to conduct a Feasibility Study/Analysis on the establishment of a Transit Hub at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. This Hub would allow for regular bus service to/from the airport as well as assist in the movement of passengers around the airport property.
